The Versailles ensemble is a highly characteristic and striking work of 17th-century French classicism. The palace and park ensemble of Versailles is the greatest architectural monument of the 17th century, exerting a strong influence on 18th-century urban planning. Versailles became the "ideal city" dreamed of and written about by Renaissance writers, and which, through the will of Louis XIV, the "Sun King," and the skill of his architects and gardeners, was realized—and in close proximity to Paris.
